Scope and Contents The original inventory was compiled between 1615 and 1630 by Pierre Dupuy and Theodore Godefroy. This copy, like the majority of the many in existence, follows the original closely and gives in the margin the pagination of the original, to which contents-lists and indexes refer. Scope and Contents

Robert Cadell (1788-1849) was the partner of Archibald Constable, and, after the dissolution of that partnership in 1825, the sole publisher of Walter Scott's novels. His papers reflect his personal and business relations with Scott and other authors, as well as his family affairs.

The copy was probably begun in 1696 (the date quoted on the title page) and not completed until 1701 or later (34.1.10(iii), folio 294 verso), made apparently by a copyist from the transcripts made by Hay when he was in Scotland between 1686 and 1689.
